Is chiropractic treatment safe?

Chiropractic care is recognized as a safe, drug-free, non-invasive therapy. Every health treatment has inherent risks, and chiropractic care is no exception to that rule; however, the risks associated with chiropractic are minor and rare. Most patients feel immediate relief of symptoms after a chiropractic treatment, but some may feel mild soreness, aching or slight stiffness similar to that experienced after exercise. The minor discomfort associated with spinal manipulation can be relieved with over-the-counter pain medication and rest. It typically fades on its own within 24 hours after treatment. Chiropractic is safe for almost everybody regardless of age or physical condition.

Do I need a referral from my MD to see a chiropractor?

No, it is not necessary to have a referral. Dr. Donald Milione welcomes calls from his Upper East Side NYC Manhattan patients at any time. However, your specific insurance plan may require an MD to order chiropractic care in order for the visit to be covered by insurance. Check with your insurance agent or HR representative if you’re unclear about the payment process.

What are the qualifications of a chiropractor?

The length and type of study required to become a chiropractor is similar to that of a medical doctor. Doctors of chiropractic care must complete four years of pre-medical undergraduate education and four to five years of professional study which includes education in anatomy, clinical diagnosis, orthopedic, neurology and physiology. After approximately 4,200 hours of study in the laboratory, classroom and clinic at accredited institutions, a chiropractor must also obtain licensing within the state they wish to practice.
