Have You Been In A Car Accident?
Auto accidents happen every day in the United States, and can range from barely a scratch on your paint to a complete totaling of your car. The injuries you sustain run the gamut, too. You may not be injured at all, or you may have mild to severe injuries. One of the most common car accident injuries is whiplash. While it is considered a mild injury, it can still cause you a lot of pain and discomfort if left untreated. Here's what you need to know about whiplash and how a chiropractor can help heal it.
What is Whiplash?
Whiplash is an inflammation of the muscles and other soft tissues in the neck. It is caused when sudden strain is put on the neck muscles, usually through a quick and severe movement. When you are in a car accident, your head may be thrown forward and then back very quickly, and with a great deal of force. It's especially common in rear-endings, but can happen in head-on crashes and side swipes, too. When this happens, your neck muscles are unprepared for the movement, and tense up as a result. The tensing is quite severe, and results in the muscles and soft tissues in the area becoming inflamed. Both the tight muscles and the inflammation lead to pain, which can range from mild to severe, and can also make it hard to turn your head all the way in either direction.
Common symptoms of whiplash besides pain and limited range of motion in the neck include:
- Aching muscles in the shoulders
- A neck that is tender to the touch
- Stiffness in the shoulders and back
- Blurred vision
Anything that causes a sudden move forward and back on your neck can cause whiplash. Even amusement park rides have been known to cause it, especially things like bumper cars and roller coasters. Car accidents are the most common cause of it, however.
Whiplash Relief on the Upper East Side
You can get whiplash relief on the Upper East Side at Dr. Donald Milione's office. Chiropractic care is excellent for treating whiplash, and is so effective that most car insurances pay for it. Through gentle adjustments to the vertebrae in your neck that may be out of alignment because of the whiplash, and therapeutic massage on the neck muscles, the pain is gradually eased and eliminated for good. When vertebrae go back in place, they don't pinch nerves or push on muscles, and relaxed muscles are pain-free muscles. Once the injury is relieved, the inflammation goes away, leaving you healed and pain-free once more.
